Less is more (flexible) – Upcoming changes to Microsoft 365 storage

On Thursday, I received an email from Microsoft about upcoming changes to my Microsoft 365 Family subscription. Microsoft has introduced a new and flexible storage plan with 2TB of shared storage for all family members instead of the previous 1TB per person deal. It was pitched as an upgrade, so I had to read it over a few times to make sure it actually meant reducing the maximum available included storage from 6 to 2TB for the subscription.

I'm altering the deal, pray I don't alter it any further

Microsoft 365 Family plan: The same great price, now with 66.6% less storage.

The “old” Microsoft 365 Family plan allowed you to add 6 “family members” that would each receive 1TB of storage. In my opinion, it was one of the best cloud storage deals on the market, especially the “Family Classic” plan excluding Copilot. It has allowed me to put my entire lossless music collection and Borg backups online. Unfortunately, the deal came from a land and time before AI, when storage prices made more sense.

Anyhow, I would love to have been a fly on the wall during the meeting where Microsoft’s wordsmiths discussed how they could put a positive spin on the downgrade. I mean, how stupid do they expect their customers to be… no, that’s a rhetorical question.
